Don't Ask Me How I Am
This World Is So Alive
They tried to tell me that the world was dead.
They tried to tell me that it's all in my head.
They tried to tell me that they've got it figured out
And if I ask any more questions, I'll be goin' straight to hell.
They tried to tell me that god was a man.
They tried to tell me that if I do the best I can,
Their systems will allow me to be up there at the top.
They tried to tell us both, tried to tell us all to stop.
CHORUS
Let me be the one to break it to you:
This world is so alive. This world is so alive.
Let me be the one to break it to you.
(This wand is wavin' around. This wand creates from the ground).
This world is so alive.
They tried to tell me this is how it has to be.
They tried to tell me it's better than history.
They tried to tell me we don't need community.
They tried to sell me heroes who had no humanity.
They tried to tell me this is the best I'll ever see,
Held up less than mediocre as extraordinary.
They tried to tell me that the world was dead.
They tried to tell me that it's all in my head.
This life was a given.
This world was a given.
No need for further action.
That's what they said.
Your life is a given.
Your world is a given.
No need for further action.
That's what they said.
They tried to tell me we're individuals.
They tried to tell me that what I have is self-earned.
They tried to tell me to keep my thoughts to myself.
They tried to tell me to never ever reach out.
They tried to tell me that life should be hard,
And if you couldn't hack it, you deserved what you got.
They tried to tell me that the world was dead.
They tried to tell me that it's all in my head.
Tell me, did they tell you those same things, too?
CHORUS
They tried to tell me to just ignore what I see.
They tried to tell me to forget my own mortality.
They tried to tell me that I will always be small.
They tried to tell me I've got no power at all.
They tried to tell me I am only physical.
They tried to tell me about the evil in the world.
They tried to tell me about the powers that be.
They tried to tell me only to believe what I can see.
Did they tell you those same things, too?
Tell me, did they tell you those same things, too?
They tried to tell me that it's all in my head.

A Day Can Change Your Whole Existence
If children were born to remember,Then forget the lives that came before,
Then you were that for me,
A life I don’t remember anymore.
Blink once, nothing’s shifted.
A day can change your whole existence.
Blink twice, nothing’s shifted.
A day can change your whole existence.
When I take the time to look into your eyes,
I try to see your soul.
I’m intruding,
Tryin' to coax you out,
Tryin' to remember the password.
Askin’ what you remember ‘bout your past words,
How far back does it go?
I am trying to see your soul.
Well I hope you don’t mind
I’ve dug little mental crevices around your eyes.
Wonderin’ if you see, if you’re seein’
In colors or greys and whites
I’m out here talkin’ to God again,
Muttering to myself that they’re all around.
Do you see in color or greys and whites?
Blink once, nothing’s shifted.
A day can change your whole existence.

Government for the People
Today I saw a 3 year old walk into court on her own.
It was shown to me on a video screen, a computer screen, from the safety of a screen
While that child had to answer in another language,
"No, I don't understand what's going on here today."
She said, "No, I don't understand what's going on here today."
The judge looked at her from his high, high place
A full grown man with an old, white face.
He said, "Do you know what a lawyer is?"
She said, "I don't know what a lawyer is."
"Well, ho hum, golly gee. What to do, well let me see.
Ho hum, golly gee, whatever shall we do?"
This new world hath been the asylum for the persecuted lovers of civil and religious liberty, from every part of Europe. Hither have they fled, not from the tender embraces of the mother but from the cruelty of the monster. (From, "Common Sense," by Thomas Paine)
"Well, ho hum, golly gee. What to do, well let me see.
Ho hum, golly gee, whatever shall we do?"
Today I saw women I've known since I was 9 years old
Defend atrocities on computer screens, from behind the screen,
From the safety of a screen
While that child in another state,
Separated from her family,
Locked up in a cage
Oh, what did these babies do?
While that family in another state
Separated from each other
Abused in a cage
Oh, what did these families do?
So tell me what did what your family do?
How did they get here?
Tell me about you.
Your family did the same for you.
How did you get here?
Tell me about you.
This old world hath been the asylum for your persecuted families, for civil and religious liberty, from every different country. Hither have they fled, not from the tender embraces of the mother, but from the cruelty of the monster,
Became the monster.
Became the monster.
Became the monster.

This tree began growing when you were just a boy
A revolutionary war hero up the river from Mount Vernon
Dip your feet in the Potomac
A road will run right through this house
They’re gonna put a train right through here after you are dead
The trees that your slaves planted
Stand tall from whence they came
Your sons will choose the wrong side of history
Centuries later people doin’ the same
Stomp stomp, clash, voices crack
Don’t they know where they came from?
Stomp stomp, clash, voices crack
Don’t they know where they came from?
Well there’s no whistle in the wind
As I wonder ‘bout the length of time
It takes for bones to decompose
How every person has to die
And if that guy can do it, so can I
If that guy can do it, so can I
While I’m still alive
I’d like to hear your story
While I’m still alive
I’d like to read your story
While I’m still alive

SUNCATCHER
If light were the slower contestant in a race for beauty
Would you capture it?
Smash it to the ground, forever entranced.
At these encounters in treetops and deep inside the earth,
You change them.
You’re a suncatcher.
People I’ve known are creeping into my dreams.
They whisper to me that they’ve only had blood to drink.
So grind down your teeth, midwest boy.
This is gonna be messy.
It’s always messy.
If you and I had photographs and tigers at our fingertips,
We’d probably still be tired.
If you and I were crossing paths, and you ducked your head
Walked right on past
I’d probably be inspired.
I’ve seen it happen a hundred times, and each time,
It’s not pretty.
It’s not pretty.
It amazes me that the pools of hell are so close to the sky.
Scratch this ink from left to right.
It’s easy to be a recluse when surrounded by another tongue.
I woke up this morning with missing shoes
And a belly full of self-destruction.
If you and I had photographs and tigers at our fingertips,
We’d probably still be tired.
If you and I were crossing paths, and you ducked your head
Walked right on past
I’d probably be inspired.
This is a distraction from reality, which we usually embrace full well.
If you hold real still, you can see hell.
You can see hell.
You can see hell.
There it is.
There it is.

TWO MINUTE BLESSING
Guess what, big heart?
My hands can hold you softly up,
Offer you out, divvi you up,
And pour you straight into the ground.
A refilling of wine
A reconciliation of Christ
Misunderstood in time
Rising on tiptoes and pounding palms into the ground.
Spider silks with webs of feet
Spinning cocoons around the sound
Guess what, small heart?
My hands demand you fill them up.
Let out your seams
You’ll find there’s more than, more than enough.
May you be connected and at peace.
May you always feel whole in yourself with other beings.
May you create beauty,
And when you choose to share it,
May you see others’ joy in seeing.
Guess what, big heart?
I know you’re there.
I saw you reflected in orbs of life.
I know you’re there.
I felt your resonance.
And when you sing, I hope the blessings tingle through your lips.
May you be connected and at peace.
May you always feel whole in yourself with other beings.
May you create beauty,
And when you choose to share it,
May you see others’ joy in seeing.

CLOUDJUMPING
Well do you want to see the world?
My dear, you’ve been here far too long.
Do you want to meet the world?
You’ll need more than a dream and a song.
So if you could shake me back to now,
That would really help me out.
If you could scream into my ear,
It would help me to hear you when you say,
“Now, now, what is it you’re on about?
Tell me, how could your view become so skewed?
Take my hand, calm down. Sing me another tune,
‘Cause honey, all I want tonight is you.”
Another eccentric in a beautifully chaotic world
Another eccentric tapping out a beat.
Play me a song that means something to you
So I can understand how you think.
We could go cloudjumping across the sky
With your ears bleeding next to mine
We could touch down any old time
We’re not in a hurry. We’re not in a hurry, no.
Another eccentric in a beautifully chaotic world,
Tapping out a beat.
We could draft new maps.
Cartographers we’ll be.
So if you could shake me back to now,
That would really help me out.

ALL THE PURE SOULS OUT THERE
The sun has charred the sides of these cliffs
They’re blackened
They’re blackened with soot
And this gorge is barely letting us pass
I see Joshua on foot.
You can sing, “Woe is me, woe is me.
I will never see
All of those things
I’ll never see, never see everything.”
You can sing, you can sing,
“Woe is me, woe is me.
I will never meet
All those pure souls out there,
those pure souls out there.”
This rock, it was a river
Admiring the temple in the distance.
The temple is its cousin
One thousand times removed.
And I am barely forming syllables.
This leaf is covered in the sickness of its tree.
And my cells are simply bonded differently.
We are carefully but quickly
Stitching, stitching, stitching, stitching
Till we become too busy,
And we do away with No’s.
Step outside. Wake up at sunrise.
We’ll eat when we’re hungry,
And we’ll do away with time.
Oh why, oh why.
I got some maybes I’ve been keepin,
Good Lord, could you retrieve them?
No. No. No.

CHARLEY
The mountains were flattened in a day by the clouds,
The very same day that Charley left town.
While the bagpipes played, everyone gathered ‘round,
They screamed, “Come back, Charley . . .”
So what’s the matter?
Thought you would’ve haunted me by now.
I guess ghosts don’t swim across the ocean,
Prefer their company in the clouds
He says he can hear you in the feedback,
But I don’t hear anything.
‘Cause you were never static, kid.
You were never static, kid.
You were never static.
So come on, Charley.
This isn’t a sad song.
It’s a toast to you, Charley.
Went out today in search of beauty,
Something to remind me of you,
For something that would sing to me
The way that you used to.
But it was cold. It was quiet.
It was silent. You were gone.
Left me with just the image of you
ith your stompin’ red boots on.
So, Charley.
I forgot how young we are.
We are just babies,
And it’s a pretty feeble ruckus that we’re all trying to cause.

THE END
Once in a long time, the world has gotten smaller.
They’ve gathered their tugboats and strongest swimmers,
Pushed Pangea back together.
Each neighbor came out of their houses,
Armed with an eraser,
Got down on both knees,
Did away with borders and boundaries.
But it took time, took time, took time.
It took time, took time, took time.
Once in a long time, when children learn of history,
They study our maps and laugh at the idea of countries,
Puzzled by the amount of weight we put on man-made lines,
At the notion of silly books and stamps needed to get from side to side.
Once in a long, long time, my dear, they see in panoramic view.
There is only a place called Earth. There’s simply me and you.
So if you find yourself wondering how every person can agree
On the value of scraps of paper, but not on life, then listen to me.
It took time, took time, took time.
It took time, took time, takes time.
You stopped the tale, and you shut the book,
And I closed my eyes right there.
There will be no more stories from you, my dear.
But oh! Oh, what there will be!
Oh, oh! What there will be!
So thanks for the story.

A BILLION LIKE YOU
Soundless, soundless, behind the glass,
Whispering, whispering
Trees swaying, swaying in three quarter time
Out of sync, out of sync
Can feel the light of freezing frames and shapes
And if we can fit them in 4 by 6,
Line the edge up straight
This will do the trick ‘til they’re over it
Peel apart traditions over time
Underneath the king, you will find a throne.
It is falling, dancing, laughing.
Slow down, child.
“I’ve met a billion like you, yeah just like you.
Clothes are all that change.
I feel so sorry for you.
You’ve most likely lived a third of your days.
I come from islands and rivers, rock, and time, time, time.
This king has layers of bruises and lava and flight.”
This will do the trick ‘til they’re over it.
Peel apart traditions over time.
Misstepping in giant leaps,
Walking hand in hand with other babies in the street.
Blink once.
Now blink twice.
Tell me if this will be your last night.
Blink once.
Now blink twice.
Tell me, will this be your last night?
Hold yourself right there, palm up, ever so gracefully
We know our purpose.
We are laughing.
We are charged with being.
This will do the trick ‘til they’re over it.
Peel apart traditions over time.
Whitewashed walls and hardwood floors,
Security in man-made system’s style.
Tell me one more fairy tale.
Tell me one more lie.
I’ll cut off my ears, learn the world with my eyes.

THE SECOND AMENDMENT
Trying to keep the whole world in my hands
Trying to get some consensus
Witnessing the walking heads insulated by barriers,
Barriers of sound
Sealed up by stories woven, knit to cover eyes, ears, and senses
Grinning mummies with their misplaced purpose
I thought it was a myth.
I thought they didn’t exist
Please recall, bring up your anger to the surface
See it there, acknowledge everything that it is
Don’t press it down, reach out your arms to hold it
We’ve all been far too hard on each other
No matter what stories we’ve been told,
We’re all human
The mummy shot her dead
So don’t jumble up your heart space with trivialities
You’ll need lots of space
For the last time,
The last time that you see your very best friend,
For sickness and earthquakes
You’ll need that energy for passing through suffering,
For clearing the debris and making a path.
For shouting out in symphony, 'cause silence can be deafening.
This isn't how it has to be.
For shouting out in harmony, 'cause silence can be deafening.
This isn't how it has to be.

DON'T ASK ME HOW I AM
If it’s not for someone else
If it is always for yourself
How do you create, How do you create
A connection?
If it is not for someone else
If it is only for yourself,
How do we create, How do we create?
I intentionally faced a displaced man
Who never learned to lie
Whose truth came out to meet me,
Had me confronting mine
I am content to listen
To a deliberate heart and mind
I can take it in, take it in, take it in
This time
Sing quietly
I want to crane my neck to listen
I feel like I can’t reach the beauty you are speaking
Your words, spoken poetry
In a second tongue
Have fallen asleep in the creases of my mind,
And they are cozied up
There’s no facade
There’s no pretense
We are really one
So why feign difference?
This is a different kind of love song.
I’m just happy you exist.
Your words, spoken poetry
In a second tongue
Have fallen asleep in the crease of my mind
And they are cozied up
They’re settled in for these winter nights
They’re taking up space,
Gonna stay there for some time
Sing quietly.
I want to crane my neck to listen.
I am celebrating you
Celebrating me
Celebrating the Oneness that is being
You
Being me
This time
That’s the impression you have the power to make
Ideas that you have the power to change
The impression you have the power to make
Ideas that we have the power to change
